Fabric Care Shirts

General Cleaning Information For Shirts

All of the shirts we sell can either be laundered at home or commercially dry cleaned. One very important rule to note is that the shirts we sell MUST BE laundered/dry cleaned BEFORE they are worn. The reason for this is all our shirts are not pre-washed, so the fibers have not tightened and the shirts will shrink some after cleaning. Natural fibers such as Cotton or Linen will shrink more than Cotton/Poly mix shirts. If you wear your shirts before you launder/clean them, some of your stains may become imbedded in the fabric fibers and will not come out. Each of the different fabrics that we use in our shirts has a different set of cleaning/laundering instructions. To know what type of fabric was used on your shirts, refer to your invoice generated at the time you ordered or our web site; do not refer to the Commercial Invoice inserted in the package; that is for customs’ purposes only.

If you are going to be Dry Cleaning your shirts make sure that you use a reputable and professional Dry Cleaner that understands the differences in dry cleaning different fabrics. If you are going to be laundering your shirts at home, the usual laundry rules apply, we will re-cap them below:

    • Sort articles of clothing by color, keeping whites, darks, brights, and medium colors separate.

    • Wash heavily soiled items separately from slightly soiled items.

    • Pre-treat stains before you wash to prevent them from setting.

    • Leave space for your clothing and detergent to move freely in the washing machine for better cleaning, do not overload the machine.

    • Add detergent to water before placing shirts in machine; failure to do so can lead to fabric discoloration in some instances due to the chemicals contained in the detergent.

    • Wash garments which generally lint, such as fleece sweatshirts, flannels and chenille robes, separately.

    • Keep your Brights vibrant by turning shirts inside out before washing.

    • Dry just long enough to remove wrinkles and moisture. If left in too long, the heat can actually shrink your shirts and set wrinkles.

    • Remove garments from the dryer immediately, put them on hangers or fold them neatly right away.

Specific Cleaning Information For Specific Shirt Fabrics

Below you will find some fabric specific cleaning instructions for your shirts, use these instructions in conjunction with the fabric definitions on our web site to properly care for your shirts.

Cotton Dress Shirts

Cotton creases on washing and wrinkles when worn, it requires some ironing. Cotton is a natural fiber that “breathes” which makes it cooler to wear than a cotton/poly mix, but makes it more susceptible to wrinkling. Many colored cottons fabrics are non-colorfast so wash them separately when new. Cotton is weakened and may be destroyed by contact with acids – even mild ones like fruit juice – if left for long periods. Wash out any staining immediately.

    • Cotton can be easily laundered, it can withstand warm temperatures

    • Any good detergent can be used to wash cotton.

    • Chlorine bleach can be used safely on cotton whites, use color safe bleach on dyed cottons.

    • Since cotton fibers are natural fibers these shirts will breathe, but will also wrinkle easily so they will require ironing.

    • A higher heat setting is needed in the dryer to dry cotton. Cotton will take much longer to dry than less absorbent fibers, but do not set the temperature too high or dry the shirts for too long, or it will create excessive shrinkage.

    • Cotton can be ironed with a hot iron.

Linen Shirts

In general, linen fabrics do not soil easily. Our linens can be safely washed using a normal wash cycle, but will definitely need ironing. Linen shirts will need to be washed a couple of times to “soften” up the fabric some. Our Linen shirts will shrink depending on how much you wash and dry them, to avoid excess shrinkage try dry cleaning. Dry cleaning them always will not get that initial softening effect you need, so they should be washed a couple of times at first if you plan to dry clean them always.

    • Both our regular Linen shirts and Deluxe Linen shirts can be washed easily and become softer with use.

    • You can use gentle bleach in small amounts on your White Linen shirts.

    • If you wash and dry your Linen shirts at home there is a tendency for colored shirts to fade.

    • Generally speaking, dry cleaning is recommended if you do not want to see a lot of shrinkage or fading with your Linen shirts.

    • Linen fabrics will need frequent ironing to reduce wrinkling.

Cotton/Polyester Shirts

Items made from a Cotton/Polyester mix are considered “wrinkle resistant”. The lower the Cotton content in the shirt (e.g. 60/40 versus 80/20) the less the shirts will wrinkle. You can wash and wear Cotton/Polyester shirts with minimal or no ironing. You can dry clean these shirts but it is not really needed.

    • Use warm water and add a fabric softener if you choose.

    • Machine dry at low temperature setting and remove articles as soon as the tumbling cycle is complete.

    • If ironing is needed, use a moderately warm iron.

    • Our Cotton/Poly shirts can be dry cleaned if you wish.

    • Follow all other laundering instructions mentioned at the beginning.

Silk Shirts

All of Silk shirts are made from 100% Hand-Woven Thai Silk. You should always treat your Silk shirts as a “delicate” item. Never use any kind of bleach on your Silk shirts. Dry-cleaning is preferable, but some garments can be gently washed in a neutral detergent, such as the special wool washes. The washing and rinsing temperature should always be warm, never hot. Spot cleaning tends to leave rings and should be avoided. After washing, hang briefly to remove excess water and press or roll between towels. Avoid steam pressing or sprinkling with water because it may cause water marks. Iron shirts on the inside – it stops the fabric getting a glossy look if the iron is a hot.

    • Dry cleaning is the preferable method to use

    • You can hand wash with a gentle detergent such as Woolite.

    • You can machine wash and dry as long as you treat the shirts as an extremely “delicate” item.

    • Do not use a hot temperature in either washing or drying since it can damage the fabric.

    • Do not use bleach on any Silk shirts.

Dress Shirt Fabrics

Dress Shirt Fabric

At execshirts we offer a wide array of different colored (coloured) fabric for a custom dress shirt. Below is a brief description on the fabrics we use.

Oxford Dress Shirt

One of the most popular fabrics for a dress shirt is an Oxford cloth. Oxford cloth is a soft elevated woven pattern, it is a heavier cloth which gives it good durability. An Oxford dress shirt can be worn in both formal and casual situations. We offer Oxford shirts in both Cotton/Poly mix and 100% Cotton.

Pinpoint Dress Shirt

A very popular fabric used in dress shirts is Pinpoint cloth. To be more accurate, it would really be called Pinpoint Oxford, but people call it Pinpoint for short. Pinpoint is lighter and smoother than a plain Oxford. Pinpoint is a fine cloth and a custom dress shirt made with Pinpoint is lighter than a traditional Oxford. We have Pinpoint fabric starting with a Cotton/Poly blend all the way up to Egyptian Cotton.

Broadcloth Dress Shirt

Another fabric that is lightweight is regular Broadcloth. Broadcloth has a very smooth finish and does not have any patterns in the material. Broadcloth is the same quality and has the same weight as Pinpoint, but has a smoother finish. Broadcloth is very suitable cloth for a Custom Dress Shirt.

Twill Dress Shirt

A regular Twill fabric is a very lightweight fabric that is very smooth to the touch, it is lighter weight than Oxford or Broadcloth. Another Twill fabric is a Woven Twill, A Woven Twill fabric is heavier than Pinpoint or Broadcloth, and usually has a slight pattern. Our Twill fabrics have a high cotton content and are the same quality as our Pinpoint cloth. Twill is suitable for casual dress shirts or formal dress shirts.

Woven Fabric Dress Shirt

If you want dress shirts that have a luxurious feel to them, then a woven fabric maybe just for you. Woven fabric is thicker and heavier than other fabrics. The pattern of the weave is noticeable to the naked eye. We usually have woven Twills, Herringbones, and other assorted deluxe dress shirt fabrics.

Herringbone Broadcloth Dress Shirt

If you want a custom dress shirt that is tightly woven with a fine ribbed effect, try using Herringbone Broadcloth. Shirts made with Herringbone Broadcloth fabric are considered fancier than those in the Oxford family of fabric. A Herringbone Broadcloth fabric is heavier than Pinpoint and Oxford. In the photo of the fabric, notice how tight the ribbed effect is. If the ribbed effect is very tight, the heavier the cloth will be.

Cotton Percentage – (Deluxe)

At execshirts we can use fabric that is either 100% Cotton, 80/20 or 60/40 Cotton/Polyester blend. Some people say they wouldn’t make a custom dress shirt with a cotton/poly blend, but we disagree, we have some great fabrics that are cotton/poly blend. Shirts made with a cotton/poly blend are called “wrinkle resistant”. Other people like the “already worn” look that you get from a shirt made with 100% Cotton. We also have more expensive fabrics that are even superior to our normal fabrics, and those are labeled as “Deluxe”. Of course in addition to that we offer an array of Egyptian Cotton Dress Shirts.

Fabric Finish

When choosing fabrics for your custom dress shirts the finish is critical. The better the finish of the fabric, the better the quality of the dress shirt. Our tailor personally approves the finish on all the fabrics we use and you will notice this when your shirts arrive.

Thread Count

Some companies try to impress you with thread count when selling dress shirts. The higher the thread count (e.g. 140′s) the softer the fabric. But you can have fabric that has a high thread count and your dress shirt will still be poor quality because the finish is poor. At execshirts our tailor ensures that the finish is excellent, and we inform you the fabric family. This way you can choose shirts knowing how light or soft the fabric will be and you can feel safe knowing that our Tailor has approved the finish, so you get a quality dress shirt that meets your sense of style and comfort.

About Men’s Dress Shirts

Standard Men’s Dress Shirts

With men’s dress shirts purchased at a department store, you get a basic style and standard sizing that will fit most men. The standard dress shirts are made in such a way that they leave lots of fabric around the torso area so that the shirts will fit a larger percentage of the population. They do this not for you…but for them. They make production runs in the thousands and the less they have to change the sizing the cheaper it is for them to make the dress shirts. A lot of men have grown used to this “baggy” or “comfortable” look with their dress shirts so they think that is normal. Women on the other hand have gotten used to a tapered look in their shirts so they would never be able to sell “baggy” shirts to women. The good thing about standard men’s dress shirts is that since they are so loose there is a larger margin for error when cutting them and you the consumer can have confidence that your shirt will fit you properly because you are used to this margin for error in your dress shirts. Our Men’s Dress Shirts are made just for you so we can tailor them in a standard size or more custom sizing if you wish. The decision on how to tailor your dress shirts is always up to you.

In line with what was mentioned above about sizing on standard men’s dress shirts, is the fact that they come with only one choice for collar and cuff. Again the manufacturers do this for their benefit not for yours. On our shirts the collars and cuffs can be selected by you and they can differ with each men’s dress shirt that you purchase. We label all the choices that you would normally receive on a standard dress shirt as the #1 option on our shirts, since these are the most common ones selected. execshirts offers a complete array of custom options for your men’s dress shirts, visit Custom Made Shirts Options to see for yourself what is available on your shirts.

Change Fit On Men’s Dress Shirts

The men’s dress shirts at execshirts are made specifically for you, from your measurements, using your preference for fabrics and styles. Every shirt is made for your frame and style. You can even have men’s dress shirts without taking any measurements, just use the standard size you would use at a department store (e.g. 16/35) ordering is as easy as 1-2-3.

There is also the option where you can have a different fit on your men’s dress shirts without taking any measurements. In your account at checkout you can select a “regular fit” or a different fit. A regular fit means that your shirts will come in a standard fit similar to a department store. If you want an athletic fit or a husky fit or even a dress shirt cut for a body builder, we can tailor that. Learn about sizing and fit on your dress shirts Sizing Custom Dress Shirts

The third option for fit is to take your custom measurements, you can either take custom measurements off your body or off an existing custom dress shirt. Instructions for taking your Custom Dress Shirt Measurements are listed on our site and are easy to follow. You can either take your measurements, or take an existing custom dress shirt that fits you and copy those measurements. We will take your measurements and tailor shirts just for you.

What About Fabrics For Men’s Dress Shirts

We also give you some information on classic fabrics such as Oxford, Pinpoint, Broadcloth, etc. We offer more information on dress shirt fabrics on our site. All the photos of dress shirts on our site are photos of actual customer dress shirts, we do not use any software to create a digital image or digital draping or anything like that, unlike some of our competitors. We believe that before you make a purchase you need to see the actual fabric of the dress shirt displayed as an actual shirt. The reason they use a digital image is that it is cheaper than displaying an actual shirt, this is done for their benefit, not for yours.

Have you ever gone to an expensive department store to buy a high quality dress shirt and pay $100-150, because you are looking for true quality? You know, the kind of fitted dress shirts that are comfortable for men to wear, and tailored to last. The problem is that unless you perfectly fit the model that the company is using, the dress shirts are going to be: too long in the sleeves; too big at the neck; too narrow in the torso; etc. etc. etc. In other words shirts that are not custom fit for you and do not fit you as well as you would like. Our Custom Dress Shirts are tailored just for you.

Ideally, you would want custom dress shirts, with all the quality of an expensive department store, yet at a price that is the same or cheaper than the department store. How Custom Are Our Dress Shirts?

You can even have custom shirts without taking any measurements, ordering is as easy as 1-2-3. The instructions for taking your Custom Dress Shirt Measurements are listed on our site and are easy to follow. What About Fabrics For Custom Made Dress Shirts?

At execshirts we know how confusing buying custom made dress shirts can be, if you let it become that way. Our tailor personally approves all of the fabrics used in our shirts, everyday vendors come to us with fabric swatches for him to review. Our tailor knows what the latest fashions are, and he also knows about classic fashions for executives. Most important of all, our tailor knows what quality fabric is all about, because you can’t make quality custom dress shirts if you don’t first start with a fabric that is high quality.

Instead of trying to impress/confuse you with thread counts (120, etc.) we keep it simple. We know that you are not a tailor, and that you want to know if your dress shirt is a cotton/polyester mix, or 100% cotton, so we tell you. We also give you some information on classic fabrics such as Oxford, Pinpoint, Broadcloth, etc. We offer more information on dress shirt fabrics on our site. We present the material (along with actual customer dress shirt photos) in a way that should be easy enough for the average executive to understand when making a decision to buy custom dress shirts. We also sell some better quality fabrics and we label those “deluxe”.

Some tailors will tell you that a cotton/polyester shirt is not worth being custom made, but we disagree. Many people prefer cotton/polyester custom shirts because they will wrinkle less and because they will shrink less (a dress shirt will shrink 2-3%). The cotton/polyester fabric that we use is “wrinkle resistant”. While some customers’ love a dress shirt made of a cotton/polyester mix, some swear by 100% cotton. These customers love the feel of 100% cotton and that already worn look that cotton dress shirts give you after you put them on. Our Wrinkle Free Shirts come in patterns or solid colors.

In addition to dress shirt fabrics, we sell Linen Shirts and Silk Shirts. Our Linen Shirts can be made with short sleeves or long sleeves. Our Linen Shirts are perfect in both formal and informal situations, and we routinely make them for wedding parties. In addition to Linen Shirts, we also make Casual Dress Shirts in other types of cloth.

Returning customers to the site will notice that the size information that they entered for custom dress shirts when they created their account is no longer visible. When we upgraded to a new version of software for the website we could not bring that information over. Do not worry, we have all your size information on file here…we have all the tailor’s measurements from all your orders and will use the most recent information we have on file.

When you go online to order more dress shirts you can just leave the size information in your account blank, or you can enter comments about changes you want to make (e.g. Neck + 1/2″)

We hope you will enjoy the newest version of the site with its upgraded graphics and increased loading speed.

Cuff Link Shirts

We see a lot of queries on our site about cuff link shirts, a “cuff link shirt” is usually another name for a french cuff shirt, a shirt with french cuffs that uses cufflinks. We also offer a “changeable cuff” which has buttons on it…and an extra whole so that you can use cufflinks instead.

But if you already know that you are going to use only cuff links…you are better off going with french cuffs…either square or round. You can see all the cuff options on our site on the custom options page.

Digital Draping

We do not use “digital draping” on our site where you take a picture of one shirt and then have a program take all of your fabrics and layer them over the digital image to display the shirt…we actually take a photo of each shirt that we sell and display that on our website.

Some of our competitors use digital draping and it certainly adds a “wow factor” to their sites…but the consumer does not really get to see the shirt that they want to purchase, it is only a computer simulation of a shirt.

It is certainly easier to not take photos of shirts and to just layer fabric images over the single photo…and that is why our competitors do that…they are located far away from their manufacturing sites and cannot afford to have a photo studio and graphics person on site to do the lengthy/costly process of taking an actual photo.

We believe that it is more beneficial to the consumer to see an actual photo of a shirt…that it enables the consumer to make a more informed decision before they buy….so that is why we go to the time and expense of adding photos on each shirt…because we look at what is best for the consumer…not what is easiest for our graphics team.

Wrinkle Free Cotton Shirts

One of the things you will notice on our website is that we have 100% Cotton dress shirts and Cotton/Poly Wrinkle Resistant shirts, see this page for Striped Wrinkle Resistant Dress Shirts:

http://www.execshirts.com/custom-dress-shirts/striped-wrinkle-free-shirts.htm

We do not sell 100% Cotton Dress Shirts that are wrinkle resistant, because we believe it is a gimmick. Cotton is a natural fibre that is supposed to breath…that is why it is lightweight and also why it wrinkles, much like Linen.

We have the option of buying “wrinkle free” 100% Cotton, but all the fabric is treated with a chemical coating that makes the fabric act “wrinkle free”, similar to a Cotton/Poly fabric. That chemical treatment will wash out after a certain number of washing and the dress shirt will no longer be “wrinkle free”. In the meantime the fabric will lose its “breathable” properties because of the coating.

So all in all we believe this is just a gimmick and we do not offer fabric like that.
